Q&A with iGuess
Q: How did you first get into music production and/or DJing?
iGuess: When I was in middle and high school, I loved listening to a lot of house, hardstyle, and trap music. I would watch DJs play sets, and it inspired me to give it a try. Around 2018, I decided to dive deeper into music production, starting with house and trap. By the end of it, I found myself gravitating toward creating riddim, even though I never expected to land there.
Q: Who are your biggest musical influences?
iGuess: My biggest influence would have to be Michael Jackson because he left such an incredible impact on the world through his performances and especially his music.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in electronic music?
iGuess: I would often watch videos of my favorite artists performing their music and seeing the fans' reactions. It was such a captivating experience that I knew I wanted to do the same—to create music and have that kind of connection with listeners.
Q: How do you approach the creative process when producing new tracks?
iGuess: I try not to take things too seriously at first; I like to play around and enjoy the process. Approaching a track with a playful mindset often helps me stay open-minded and leads me from creating something for fun to finishing a full track.
Q: What software and equipment do you use in your setup?
iGuess: I use both Windows (desktop) and Mac (laptop) in my setup. My go-to DAW is Ableton, paired with some of my favorite plugins like Serum, Filtron, Reason Rack, Soothe 2, and Pro Q3.
Q: Do you have a favorite local venue where you enjoy performing?
iGuess: Out of the venues I’ve performed at, my favorite has to be Catch One in LA.
Q: What challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them?
iGuess: Balancing music production with a full-time job and other responsibilities has been tough. After a long day, I often just want to relax. To make it work, I carry my laptop everywhere and create tracks during breaks and lunches. I’ll often transfer ideas to my PC at home to continue working on them.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring DJs and producers in your community?
iGuess: Don’t be shy to reach out for help. Everyone in this community has similar goals, and networking with other DJs and producers can lead to new opportunities and valuable learning experiences.
Q: Are there any upcoming projects or releases you can share with us?
iGuess: I’m currently working on some exciting projects for 2025, including collaborations with fellow producers. This year, I’m planning a self-release for my track “System Failure” and might have another release before year’s end.
Q: How do you engage with your fans and build your community?
iGuess: I connect with fans by sharing music content—both my own and others’—offering feedback to those looking to grow, and staying genuine in my interactions. I love talking about music or upcoming events, and I’m always happy to engage. If anyone wants to chat, I’m just a message away!
